I have been designing resources for many years as I worked with preschool and primary age youngsters with delayed or impaired speech and language skills. The resources using symbols are free. My latest resources which I have illustrated are extra tasks based on Marion Blank's Language Levels (previous ones have been free). They can be used with groups of mixed language ability and are reasonably priced.

Using Language Levels by Marion Blank: 8 Fairy Tales 1

(0)
Fairy Tales 1 includes versions of three well-known fairy tales: The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Snow White. There is one illustration per tale. A small vocabulary set of early words is suggested. There is a simple text (RA 7y) for each tale for early readers, or to read aloud as an introduction to each tale. There are also supplementary activities (colouring, comprehension or word work). The main focus of the Language Levels pages is one-to-one or small group work with children who need carefully graded questions. The Marion Blank Language Levels I-IV move from very direct questioning (approx. 3y but appropriate for older children with impaired/delayed language skills) towards much more abstract work (5+y). Each of the three tales in the resource has questions at each Level. The ideas would also suit EAL teaching. The cover note includes suggestions for printing and use.

Using Language Levels by Marion Blank: 7 Different Habitats

Different Habitats has illustrations for Ocean/Arctic/Rainforest/Australian desert. A small vocabulary set of early words is included but, as this title is more ‘academic’ than the earlier ones, new words are necessary for comprehension, speaking and reading. The Marion Blank Language Levels I-IV move from very direct questioning (approx. 3y but appropriate for older children with impaired/delayed language skills) towards much more abstract work (5+y). Each of the four scenes in the resource has questions at each Level. The ideas would also suit English language learning, EAL / ESL / ESOL and Speaking and Listening tasks. The four pictures are also included on a single sheet for making new activities. There is a simple illustrated text (RA 7y) plus additional pages about further habitats. The cover note includes suggestions. The illustrations could be used for many topics of conversation: animals and their homes/food/adaptations; weather round the world; equator versus polar regions; climate change; water cycle; living things.

Maths concept words and phrases illustrated

Symbols (c) Widgit Software 2010. These pages show some of the words that underpin talking about quantity, position, comparing, placing, arranging and so on. They all need to be practised with many different objects to ensure generalisation. Remember to stress first in a row is always on the left. This is critical to the understanding of instructions in maths and other areas. (First in the queue, however, depends on which way the queue is going. It's hard talking maths words!) Index in sheet order and alphabetical order.

Suggestions on the worksheet pages use a very visual ‘take-away’ method first (by destroying the correct number of images). The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark - simplified

(7)
Three resources to help children with impaired language skills understand and benefit from this lovely book used in so many schools. Illustrated with PCS or Widgit symbols. The pages could be presented with a simplified telling. If the CD is available, it is always useful to hear the story read exactly the same lots of times and the pages could accompany this. The song prompt cards for one of the CD songs lists the 'wow words' - listen and find the card, or use the card to sing the song with the instrumental version. The mind-map is a prompt for children to retell the story in their own way.
